I normally don’t do movie reviews but anyone who knows me or reads the blog will know I love vampires. After the review are some samples of my vampire fantasy shots but the vampires in Daybreakers move and bite and inhabit a wonderful believable world.

Karen and I were invited to a preview screening of vampire movie Daybreakers last night by Rob Dew at Videopro, Brisbane. Rob’s a good guy who helped me so much when I made my short film a few years ago.

The screening was pretty special as the films directors, Michael and Peter Spierig introduced the film and did a Q & A session afterwards.

I made a film a while back so I know how it difficult it is to simply make an average short film so it was great to hear from guys who made a fantastic long one :-)

The film is a mix of a traditional bloody vampire movie and a highly intelligent real world analysis of what it would be like if vampires took over the world and ran out of humans to feed on.

Personally I loved it. Karen is a little squeamish when it comes to horror and even she thought it was very good and thought provoking.

One of the more fascinating things about the film is that the Spierig brothers are Brisbane boys and managed to make most of the film right here, both for principal photography and visual effects. That alone is a miracle and they have to be applauded for managing to make a grade A Hollywood blockbuster in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Don’t take my word for it, the film opened very well in the States and ranks high on the internet movie database.

If you found Twilight stylish but lacking teeth and prefer your vampires movies served with a little more blood, I’d highly recommend a a trip the multiplex for Daybreakers. If you need stars to make you go to the cinema, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill and Claudia Karvan star next to a very familiar Aussie supporting cast.

Here’s my vampires (I’m in there in a couple of shots). Would be nice to make these images move and bite. Maybe one day but for now you can be in a still version of a vampire movie if you wish.
